Description:

96 species world wide ~ dull brownish variations ~ the Alaudidae family is thought to be the most primitive of oscine passerines in spite of its complex songs. 21 subspecies in NA

Habitat:

a ground dweller, including nesting, likes barren ground .. avoids forests.

Notes:

this is a juvenile male and lacks the 'black horns' and black under-eye/lores stripe. female is just a duller less contrasting version but i caught them in this field together learning to be Horned Larks. Quite handsome come Spring time
