Field Notes

Description:

Bison and horse herd occupying same field in Grand Teton National Park. When a horse got to close to a bison calve, an adult bison charged the horse.

Habitat:

grasslands

Notes:

Bison bison are also known as buffalo. Horses and cattle graze in the same fields as bison in Grand Teton National Park because easements were issued when the park expanded its boundaries to its current size in 1950. Most of the easements have expired or been abandoned in the past 60 years, with the remaining two or three slated to expire in the next decade.
