Field Notes

Description:

The sea fan is a kind of soft coral, belonging to a group called the gorgonians. They are filter feeders, catching any particles that float past them. The flexible, fan shaped gorgonians such as these are usually found in shallower waters where there are strong currents.

Habitat:

Coral reefs

Notes:

I found this on a site called "The Ridge" which was an outcrop of rock on the edge of the continental shelf... in other words, right next to the blue! There were many strong current here, so I think this guy was very happy.
