Field Notes

Description:

Trapdoor spiders are medium-sized mygalomorph spiders that construct burrows with a cork-like trapdoor made of soil, vegetation and silk.

Notes:

Found this guy on the threshold to our back door. I wanted to pick it up so I could get better shots but thought I had better check to see if it is venomous first!

Thanks Keith! I've always had a fascination for spiders & used to either live with or gently pick up & evict any I found my house in England. I have to keep reminding myself I have to be more careful over here, especially as most of the ones I find in our house seem to be brown recluses!
Well, all spiders are venomous, but few pose any danger to most humans. As far as I'm aware only the Black Widow, Brown Recluse and Hobo Spider are considered medically significant. That being said, I still wouldn't want to be bitten by one of those guys.
Thanks Keith! I think you are spot on as usual! I take it they are not venomous?
Looks like a trapdoor spider. Maybe Cyclocosmia. http://bugguide.net/node/view/31429
