Description:

About 2 inches long, black with yellow stripes. Similar to Oakworm Caterpillar but with fewer stripes.

Habitat:

Rural SW Pennsylvania

Caterpillar: revisited! Haploa sp., Haploa confusa looks like the best match to me. I love your most recent comment on this spotting, for science!! :-)
Yeh ... They might make you itchy but it's all in the name of science.
I don't think feeling the spines/hairs is a good idea. They might make you itchy.
Sorry for the slow response. It was pretty hairy but they didn't appear to be stiff enough to call spines. Can't be sure, though ... I should have felt it.
