Field Notes

Description:

The zebra spider, Salticus scenicus, is a common household jumping spider. Like other jumping spiders, it does not build a web. It uses its four pairs of large eyes to locate prey and its jumping ability to pounce and capture it. Zebra spiders are often noted for their awareness of humans. Upon noticing someone observing them, they can be seen raising their head, and usually change behavior. This one was only about 2mm long!

Species ID Suggestions

I've updated the id on this spotting.
Thanks Gordon, I will get digging! :) Do you have an idea of an ID for this guy? http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7382654
This appears to be a jumping spider (family Salticidae). There are lots of jumping spiders, but you can start a search here and see if you can narrow it the ID down: http://bugguide.net/node/view/1962/bgimage?from=768
