There are 'genetic' eruptions in the insect world as in the Amphibian and other worlds, not always explainable ~ their worlds' so much different than ours. And there's a cute video on the same slate as yours ~ Kids pretending to be ants ~ go marching one by one...
Good question, Heather! It could be hive migration! Another explanation could be that their home had been flooded due to amount of rain we've had recently. I checked back on them today and the traffic has died down considerably. I think it was good fortune that I got to see them when I did!
