Field Notes

Description:

One of 11 monitor lizard species recorded for Papua. This monitor's body "is dark green or black in color and covered with golden yellow spots", however within this scheme there is wide variation across its geographic range. This species has a vast "geographic distribution, from the Moluccas to the Solomon Islands and from Australia to Micronesia."

Habitat:

Spotted climbing a coconut tree at edge of thin band of coastal freshwater/sago swamp forest and a village yard.

Notes:

This spotting occurred on the same day as this one of the same species: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7358221, but perhaps 25 km away.
