Field Notes

Description:

Blue-green color.

Habitat:

Shallow pond in rural SW Pennsylvania

Notes:

These colonies are formed in two dimensions only. They do not grow in vertical layers because that would interfere with the photosynthesis of the cells in the lower layer. Previously known as blue-green algae (before it was realized that they are bacteria and not algae).

Yuko ... Just about anything "down there" can blow your mind in one way or another. You might like to check out my blog "Nature Notes". You might start by clicking on "Microscopy" under Categories on the right side of the page. http://www.zone-vx.com/blog
I wonder what makes them line up like this. It blows my mind!
