Description:

Fomitopsis pinicola, in English sometimes known as Red Banded Polypore, is a polypore mushroom of the genus Fomitopsis. The species is common throughout the temperate Northern hemisphere. An alternative binomial name is Fomes pinicola.

the temperate Northern hemisphere

Notes:

The spruce-"porling {german}" is well marked by its red border zone in older fruiting bodies. Similar can be the tinder fungus, but this does not has a meltable and KOH-soluble crust. Confusion with different Reishi can also occur. Those, however, have brown meat and brew spores
