Field Notes

Description:

Apis cerana; Fabricius, 1793. This picture was taken from some distance, by my nephew, using his cell phone camera. I have sharpened the image as much as I can to try and identify the bees, but I can't be sure of the species, based on my rather poor processing skills. So, I searched on the internet for pictures of bee hives in Southeast Asia and the results all seem to agree, based on shape and size, that this is very likely to be the hive of Apis cerana, the Asiatic Honey Bee.

Habitat:

This bee hive was on the trunk of an unidentified tree in a patch of forest, just outside of the boundary of a new solar power station (under construction).

Notes:

I did not take this photo. It was taken by my nephew (at his workplace), using his cell phone camera. He gave me a copy of the picture with his permission to publish it on Project Noah.
