Field Notes

Description:

Large white mushrooms. Possibly Laetiporus sp.

Habitat:

Growing on a dead tree trunk

Notes:

I had to take pictures over the fence. I didn't want to jump the fence for a better image. The neighbor isn't very nice.

Thank you so much Alex! I knew it was a long shot with these photo's but am quite impressed with your information!
sorry, can not really give a suggestion for this one. It seem that he has no gills, think i saw some white underside under the highest lying mushroom. Find it somewhat similair with my expierence, spotting a tree fungus from some distance (example: laetiporus sulphureus { Laetiporus gilbertsonii (California)- http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&cp=9&gs_id=1h&xhr=t&q=baumpilze&safe=off&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=672&bs=1&wrapid=tljp1318022885356016&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi#um=1&hl=nl&safe=off&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=+Laetiporus+gilbertsonii+(California)&oq=+Laetiporus+gilbertsonii+(California)&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=17354l17354l18l20934l1l1l0l0l0l0l210l210l2-1l1l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=6a38e539731da30c&biw=1280&bih=672 } ) many of those tree mushrooms have those tubes as gills, some are white and looking from some meters away as an smooth surface .On the piece totally to the left: it seems that the surface above is somewhat darker (grey-white,grey,yellow) than the boarder (white band). The first 2 pictures from the link are similair coloration. And those are usa- mushroom- species, even confirmed in california. I can only suggest, you set it as : tree fungus --> possibility for :Laetiporus. species ! good luck
Hi Alex, I was able to borrow someone's SLR with a great zoom although I can't say much for their auto focus. I've uploaded the image (first one). I don't see gills. You can see where one was attached higher up on the tree but fell on the right. I only noticed these yesterday as they're not very visible from our yard so I don't know how long they've been there or if they show up regularly.
is it longer there (6month or maybe already a year) like a red banded polypore or is the appearence of it a matter of weeks/1-season like some other edible mushrooms. could you see if he had gills (divided) or tubes (just white with the naked eye) . Was it looking as a soft or hard cap. maybe we come at least to a genus. will look by again the days
