Field Notes

Description:

Spider found in house in Rugby, UK

Notes:

I have put this down as a European Garden Spider, however many websites say that the markings on the back form a cross, though this is not evident in the photo. Wikipedia: "Individual spiders' colouring can range from extremely light yellow to very dark grey, but all European garden spiders have mottled markings across the back with five or more large white dots forming a cross". Nick's Spiders: "It is easily identified by the distinctive white cross on the abdomen (although in some specimens it is indistinct or missing)."
