Field Notes

Description:

Observed grazing along the Deschutes River Trail in Bend, Oregon.

Habitat:

This species thrives on the edge of the forest, as the dark forest lacks the underbrush and grasslands that the deer prefers as food, and completely open areas lack the hiding spots and the cover it prefers for harsh weather. This deer often is most active at dawn and dusk, and is frequently involved in collisions with automobiles.

I think you're right, Patrick. Thank you! :)
Isn't that a mule deer? As far as I know, mule deer are the prominent species in that area. They have a black tip on their tail as well.
I observed this buck in the PNW. I don't believe the range of the White-tailed deer extends to this region.
