Field Notes

Description:

This bird is commonly mistaken for an owl. Unlike owls this bird feeds almost exclusively on insects and uses its mouth, not talons, to catch its prey. Seen while walking the dog through my local bushland, taken with an old digital cam.

I'm fascinated by these birds! They look darker, especially on the breast, than the ones around here (Upwey, Victoria).
Fabulous spotting! They do look like owls, don't they?
I live near you! and I made a sighting of tawnys too! In Edgewater!
Amazing! Never seen them!
