Field Notes

Description:

The cheetah is the only felid with non-retractable claws and pads that disallow gripping therefore cheetahs cannot climb trees, although they are generally capable of reaching easily accessible branches. The cheetah, however, achieves by far the fastest land speed of any living animal—between 70 and 75 mph in short bursts covering distances up to 1,600 ft, and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to over 62 mph in three seconds.

Habitat:

Serengeti

Notes:

We spotted this female cheetah with 3 cubs shortly after dawn whilst taking a balloon ride over the Serengeti.

Yes, very sad. Their range used to extend across the middle east too. The ancient Egyptians used them to hunt - like dogs! I saw paintings of them in one of the tombs I visited!
Hmmm.... But thanks a lot sharing very rare Cheetah spotting... I feel so bad about extinction of Indian Cheetah...!!
They are much shyer than the other big cats but they are also very vulnerable particularly to lions & hyena who will kill the cubs & even the adults. The males usually have an easier time of it as siblings will stay together & hunt as a group, but females often have a very hard time.
Hahaha... They surely hate Humans...!!
