Description:

Water Hyacinth, also known as blue devil is believed to have originated in the Amazon basin , Its well known for its reproduction potential and as a plant that can double its population in only two weaks, The seeds of the plant will sprout even after 20 years .
Heavily grown water hyacinth prevents absorption of thermal energy into the water system and leads stratification, so the surface layers of the water column could be able to absorb little amount of oxygen through diffusion. The continued utilization of dissolved oxygen by the plant in the upper water column makes the bottom water anoxic. It results in the development of unfavorable condition for the growth and sustenance of fish and other biota.

Its is a good absorber of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from water and can be used as a good source of compost material, Its also found to enhance the rate of multiplication of earthworms

Nowadays Water Hyacinth induced in Phytoremediation, waste water treatment and Bioenergy ,
