Field Notes

Description:

Smelly stinkhorn fungi with a rather interesting appearance. I had seen the fully mature specimens at the park earlier, but decided to poke at some of the egg-looking balls lying around to see if they were immature stinkhorns. Sure enough, they are!

Habitat:

Wood chips at a playground beneath oak trees.

Notes:

My previous spotting at this same site is here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7365735. Here's a really informative blog post about this stinky phallic fungus: http://blog.mycology.cornell.edu/?p=129. They also have a time-lapse video of them emerging: http://blog.mycology.cornell.edu/?p=18. Oh, and they are supposedly edible: http://www.centralpamushroomclub.org/node/125. Any volunteers to check that out? ;)

They smelled like a combination of really strong mushroom smell (woodsy, earthy) plus very dirty socks. They are on a playground near the swings and I can't stand to be over there for too long before the smell gets overwhelming.
Pew, I think I can smell the stink in your photos! What would you liken their odor to? They look like they'd smell like rotten eggs. Regardless, I'll pass on the taste testing, thanks anyway!
