Field Notes

Description:

Snake with light patterning, about 4 feet in length. It was non-aggressive as I "guided" it away from our door where it had been resting in the curl of the rug.

Habitat:

Our house is near a stream with many deciduous trees around.

I agree with Doren B. Size, pattern and habitat strongly suggest a water snake. And I've heard that while they are not venomous, they can be a bit ummm..... "assertive", so I am glad this fellow didn't give you any arguments. Nice photo. :)
Might be a Northern Water Snake, Nerodia sipedon. Their coloring is quite variable. http://www.herpsofnc.org/herps_of_NC/snakes/Nersip/Ner_sip.html
