I think it is some sort of armoured ground cricket similar to this one. http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8172000/8172168.stm Read about their defense mechanisms, glad I didn't try to pick it up.
Wow! It looks like something out of the 'Ice Age' cartoons!
These are pretty big too. At least 3 or 4 inches long.
this is a really cool spotting!!! Looks like something related to grasshoppers or locust. However I am unable to find anything close.
