Description:

Small worm sitting on a growing cypress knee in the swamp.

Habitat:

Spotted at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

Notes:

Possibly an armyworm of some kind (reminds of a fall armyworm)? Sorry that the picture's slightly out of focus!

It is hard to tell size form this perspective though, and it could very well be something else. Armyworms actually change a lot in appearance from instar to instar.

They all have to hatch out of a small egg! You might be more accustomed to seeing larger ones because they are more noticeable.
Thanks for pointing out the cypress knee and the possibility that the worm could belong to Noctuinae. If I recall correctly, the worm was very small...
Mauna, the root is a cypress knee. I agree it looks like an armyworm, but it is too hard for me to say this zoomed out when they are similar-looking caterpillars in Subfamily Noctuinae
