Field Notes

Description:

White-tailed ptarmigan in its fall plumage. It's the smallest of the ptarmigans and the only alpine bird that doesn't migrate in winter. It's coloring also camouflages it perfectly with the surrounding rocks.

Habitat:

James Peak, Colorado Front Range, ~13,000 ft. altitude, rocky alpine tundra
