Field Notes

Description:

Zeuzera is a genus in the Family: Cossidae (Carpenter or Miller Moths). "The Cossidae, the cossid millers or carpenter millers, make up a family of mostly large miller moths. This family contains over 110 genera with almost 700 known species, and many more species await description." Wikipedia. I have been unable to identify this specimen down to species level. It bears similarities to numerous specimens shown in https://philepidoptera.wixsite.com/philep, but it is not an exact match.

Habitat:

This moth was spotted on Lablab Bean (Lablab purpureus) in our garden. This poor creature looked rather weak and I felt that it was perhaps at the end of its life. I first saw it at around 8:00 a.m. and checked back on it throughout the day. It was still on the same leaf at nightfall and I did not see it the next morning.

Notes:

I subsequently had two more spottings of Zeuzura spp. which, as far as I can make out appear to the same as the specimen shown here. One in January, 2017 and the other in November, 2019. These two moths seemed to be in much more robust health. So I will upload those spottings after this so that anyone who is interested (or can help me with the Species) can have a better look.
