Field Notes

Description:

Padre's Shootingstar is a dicot and a perennial herb that is native to California and is found only slightly beyond California borders. I spotted this plant hiking near Big Sur, CA.

Habitat:

Open Grassland near Big Sur, CA.

Notes:

Wikipedia: "Dodecatheon clevelandii is spring deciduous, dying back to the ground after the rains cease. It has basal clumps of leaves up to 16 centimeters long with nodding flowers each about an inch long on stems up to a foot tall. The flowers are magenta to deep lavender to white. This species hybridizes with Dodecatheon hendersonii, from which it can be distinguished by its green stem."
