Field Notes

Description:

Growing in large and dense tufts, some 10 to 15 cm tall carpophores; various stages (young, older) of carpophores in same tufts. Honey-brown caps, distorted, covered with yellowish fibrils; gills whitish. White, but flushed yellow stem, presence of stem ring when older.

Habitat:

On an old tree stump, treeline of the wooded area in a town park - foothills of Jura mountain range.

Notes:

Many thanks to Mauron, who ID-ed this mushroom for me.

Honey fungus is an edible mushroom, but not particularly appreciated - it is said to have somewhat sweet-ish and nutty taste, sometimes a bit bitter. The aroma is said to be somewhat unpleasant... (not all authors agree on these...)

Many thanks Ahmed; got some new pics of this bunch from today, will post to this same spotting...
These are young specimen. Ring is not visible yet. Honey fungus have a lot of different variations. But could be some other Armillaria species. Greetings.
Thanks Ahmed, I'll check on that - but I'm not sure about it, as there is no stem ring visible...
