Description:
The Egyptian goose is a large duck with a brown eye-patch and neck-ring. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa; introduced elsewhere. Spotted here in the Masai Mara.
Habitat:
Wetlands and adjacent lands and fields. Also found in suburban area and sheltered bays on coasts.
Notes:
The Egyptian goose is in the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae, and is the only remaining member of the genus Alopochen. Previous members the Reunion shelduck and the Mauritius shelduck are extinct.
