Field Notes
Description:
Endangered southeast Asian crocodilian with affinities to both the Family Crocodylidae and to the Indian Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) in the Family Gavialidae. This taxonomy is unresolved.
It is slender-snouted, but slightly more robust than Gavialis gangeticus (from which it derives its common name). Dorsal skin color in juveniles and adults is a light tan with black banding and spots on the head, body and tail with skin becoming darker in adults. This is a large crocodilian species, with maximum size of males generally 4 to 5 metres (or larger according to anecdotal information).
Habitat:
Captive juveniles at Bali Safari & Marine Park. Natural habitat is freshwater lakes, slow moving rivers & swamps.
Notes:
I did not see this species represented on Noah so I added this captive spotting.
