LOL! Thanks Lisa...That's what happens when all my mushroom knowledge comes from a book, and apparently a book lacking in some important details ;P
@Christine: Ganoderma lucidum is not found in North America to my knowledge. I would say G. tsugae is a good match.
A possible conflict with this ID is that G. tsugae tends to grow on conifers, while a very similar species, Ganoderma lucidum, prefers hardwood. It's hard to tell from the picture what the stump is.
