I believe your spotting was of a Common Yellowthroat, (Geothlypis Trichas). Most of North America is its breeding range. If you are looking for a good book to help you specie birds I recommend Smithsonian Field Guilde to the Birds or North America, I use it every time :) Happy Birding.
