Field Notes

Description:

Brown spider with its prey strung in a vertical line in its web (sorry it looks horizontal in the photo). Spider is the third brown lump from the left. According to wikipedia this spider "is easily recognized by the way it strings together the dead bodies of insects and other debris and hangs it near the center of its web", presumably to avoid predation.

Habitat:

On a web between a sapling and a support stick at the Penn State Arboretum.
