Field Notes

Description:

Superficially these insects resemble beetles but thanks to Noah spotter input I am now calling these shield bugs in the Family Plataspidae or Plataspididae. See http://eol.org/pages/2645348/overview. Provisionally, "black bean bugs." Brachyplatys sp.

Habitat:

This spotting on house terrace in coastal zone village (surrounded by ocean beach, sago swamp and forest).

Notes:

I find these small bugs on the terrace furniture at my field base every morning. Presumably they are attracted by the porch light.
Also note the 2nd photo. What's that posterior protuberance?

I was cheated too the first time I saw them. I really thought they were beetles. Human won't suspect that insects can deceive us too.
Thanks. I've now reassigned them and in this spotting too: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7509091
Thanks very much. I was bothered about this spotting (see my spotting note) but didn't find a replacement taxon and settled on beetle reluctantly...I'll look into it.
Hi, I don't think they might be beetles. They might be Plataspididae bugs.
