Field Notes

Description:

Midden pile of a Douglas squirrel. The douglas squirrel cuts green fir cones in autumn, leaving piles of cut cones and/or the green fir seeds as a way to store food for winter. This pile is newly started and fairly small. I've seen them several feet across and up to a foot deep

Habitat:

coastal forest
