Field Notes

Description:

Bugs with white sides and black top which were floating/walking on the water. Six long black legs and there was an organish mark on top where the legs met. Almost and inch and a half in size. Locals called them water spiders, maybe they heard someone saying water striders and made their own version of the name? No idea on the exact ID.

Habitat:

Marshes.

Thanks Asergio and Mick. I dont think I will be able to pinpoint the exact species. Will mark it as water striders. Both the websites were helpful.

Thanks Kristal for the start. Will research and see what I can get.
These are water striders in the family Gerridae. Maybe someone who knows them better could get you a more specific ID. They are true bugs who skate on the surface of the water and hunt insects that land on the water surface. Here's a wikipedia page with more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerridae.
