Field Notes

Description:

Spotted this one sitting on a log and watching the water for fishes. There are many logs placed around in water to attract the birds to sit on them. A slim, graceful grey and white tern with long deeply forked swallow tail. Eats fish, tadpoles and water insects.

Habitat:

Seen at Nalsarovar bird sanctuary.

Notes:

Flies a few feet above the water scanning the surface for fish. From time to time it plunges in the water with closed wings and reappears with the catch in the beak. As it flies with the catch the catch is usually jerked up in the air and swallowed head first.
