Field Notes

Description:

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the West Indies and the Galápagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to Europe, with records from Spain, the Azores and England. An all-white population found only in the Caribbean and southern Florida was once known as a separate species, the Great White Heron.

Habitat:

Wetlands across North American.

Notes:

I was sitting on the Beaver dam behind my house, at around 10:30pm when this young Blue Heron landed on the dam no more than ten feet in front of me. I was unable to put my camera to my eye, so I started "shooting from the hip!" Quite literally, I had the camera in my lap when this guy landed. :-D

As I was snapping pictures he walked closer, trying to figure out what I was, and if I was a threat. He got within three feet of me before I let out a little laugh, I just couldn't contain myself. The not so little guy, took off, and almost hit me with his wing, as you can see from the second shot in the series. :-D I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did!!!
