Field Notes

Description:

A dark brown hawk with a brown and white head and white underparts. Across the upper breast is a broad brown band or necklace which is visible when the bird is at rest or during flying.

Habitat:

Ponds, marshes.

Notes:

A fish eating hawk, flies up and down over the water scanning the surface for fish, occasionally hovering to investigate more closely. When it gets an opportunity the bird closes its wings and hurls itself upon the prey, striking the water with a splash, sometimes completely submerging in the water. The fish is then carried off to some convenient place nearby and eaten.

Thanks William, the video is amazing, especially at the end when the bird is opening its claws. Thanks for sharing.
