Field Notes

Description:

Coccinellidae ;Coccinellinae; Coccinellini; Heteroneda billardleri Crotch, 1871. The entire dorsal surface of this beetle is yellow with a pattern of black lines which give the appearance of being caught in a net, hence the name "Netted or Netty" Ladybird Beetle. A scientific paper published by three Philippine academics describes the foraging behaviour of H. billardieri. It is beautifully written, very informative and easy reading for us ordinary folks. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/293251054_Foraging_Behavior_of…

Habitat:

This Netted Ladybird Beetle was spotted on a the leaf of a Mango Tree (Mangifera indica) which had fallen to the ground. The leaf was still fresh and appeared to have been cut by some other insect in the canopy.
