Field Notes

Description:

The olive tree is a tree that can take on very variable dimensions and shapes. It has long leaves averaging 5 to 8 centimeters, green at the top and silver-gray at the bottom, which live an average of about 3 years. The trunk appears gray-green and smooth until approximately ten years old; then it becomes knotty, with deep and twisted grooves and takes on a dark, almost black color. The roots have many superficial branches that carry out most of the nutritive absorption activity. They spread horizontally up to 2-3 times the height of the plant and penetrate the soil, in the most fertile soils, up to 1.5 or 2 meters deep.

Habitat:

Dry land.

Notes:

The olive tree is a robust tree, able to withstand, in winter, temperatures below 6/7 degrees below zero, and to withstand long droughts in summer. It is cultivated in areas with average rainfall of 350/400 mm. annual and summer temperatures of up to 40 degrees. Olive wood is worked at home, especially for making accessories and furniture.

Hello, Hema. The oil is extracted by pressing the fruit: the olives. The olives directly from the tree are not eaten because they are very bitter. In order to eat them, you have to soak them for 9 days, changing the water daily.
Do you extract oil from this tree?.Is the raw fruit edible ?
