Field Notes

Description:

Argiope luzona (Walckenaer, 1842). For several days I have been out and about (in between the heavy rains we get at this time of year) looking for juvenile Signature Spiders, without much success. I had been patiently waiting for them to appear when the rainy season got underway. So, it was encouraging to see three of them all at the same time, right in our own backyard. I am hoping to be able to make some observations and take photos of the process of renewing the discoid stabilimenta (web decorations). Unfortunately, none of these three were positioned where I could stand and take pictures from a sustainable vantage point (it would be impossible to either crouch or stand on tiptoe for a sustained period) but this is just the start of the new "Argiope season" and it should just be a matter of time until I find one that is positioned just right for my purpose.

Habitat:

These three juvenile Signature Spiders were all spotted on the same day in our backyard. They had constructed their webs close to each other, the first two on banana plants and the third on an unidentified shrub. It was encouraging to see them appearing again, with the arrival of the rainy season.
