Field Notes

Description:

Large (8 inches) salamander with chunky body and chunky legs, blue spotting along sides and belly, rest of body chocolate brown coastal grooves. Head short and rounded like a blue spotted salamander's. Spotted on rainy night in spring on the dirt road diving the pond from larger wetland complex, within a few feet of the pond.

Habitat:

Manmade semi permanent pond near dirt road on farm

Notes:

I believe this is a hybrid blue spotted - jefferson's salamander, in the mole salamander family

Well, I think, I am fairly certain, that it is not a blue spotted, but a blue spot - jefferson's hybrid. My field notes for this ID are that the body is larger and heavier than a typical blue spotted, and also the spots are only on the belly and sides, and the rest of the body is chocolate brown like a jeffersons. What do you think?
