The new growth stem tips, even now, taste good with a thick clear fluid that is slightly sweet and good. I usually keep it in my mouth a while, succking on iy whenver i ca.
I really like the sassafras trees. I'm new to the hardwood-diverse east, and these are easy to identify. Plus my daughter (almost 5 y.o.) calls these "dinosaur foot trees" because the tri-lobed leaves look like dinosaur feet to her. Next year I'm hoping to try my hand at sassafras root beer.
Going North on Sunday. Hope I get to see some of these trees.
