Description:

11-14 inches long. Blue-gray above and on head; collar white; crest ragged. Male has a blue-gray band across breast. Feale has a second, rusty band across belly. Seldom seen away from water; dives from air for fish; has a loud, rattling call.

Habitat:

Rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshes.
