Description:

Small ground squirrel eating a nut and keeping an eye on us at the City of Rocks National Reserve in Idaho.

Habitat:

Rocky area with mountain mahogany and juniper trees, oregon grape.

Glad I could ID one... I used to try to catch them when I was young. Caught up with a group of them one day that had no human fear. Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough to realize they were probably sick... :-)
The golden-mantled ground squirrel can be identified by its chipmunk-like stripes and coloration, but unlike chipmunks, it lacks any facial stripes.
