KenSutliff, Common Mergansers winter where you live, and then go north in the summer. The Sibley Guide to Birds is a great birding help!
thank you.i have a book here, familiar birds of north america, publisher in 1986,but its not in there, guess i should get a more updated book...or its not common around...?
Wonderful pics Ken! This is a kind of duck that is called a goosander in Europe, but I believe the North American name for it is common mersanger. The pictures look like females or juveniles, I'm not sure, but I'm sure on the species! I'll suggest an ID and link to the Wiki page, but for a clear indication, here is the page from the RSPB (English bird conservation group), if you click on the second illustration you can see it's a match! http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/g/goosander/index.aspx
