Field Notes

Habitat:

Amazon rainforest. Forest floor.

Notes:

Cool Amazon butterfly observed on July 5, 2014 at the Amazon Conservatory of Tropical Studies (ACTS), Peru. Fairly drab brown when the wings are closed, but wow it really pops when the wings are open!

Thanks bayucca. I'll use your ID suggestion at least until someone suggests something different.
Nymphalidae, Charaxinae, Fountainea sp. and looks like being Fountainea cf. nobilis. I must admit, I thought it should be an easy one..., but definitely not. I am also not sure if every ID seen on the net is really correct or trustable. Another candidate would be Fountainea ryphea. But neither of the links are really a good help... http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/ih01/Fountainea_nobilis_pacifica_HOLOTYPE_M_COLOMBIA_Choco_San_Jose_del_Palmar_1100m_7-IV-1989_Luis_Miguel_Constantino_1_i.htm http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/t/Fountainea_a.htm https://www.flickr.com/photos/37957896@N03/4216981722/in/photostream/
