Field Notes
Description:
dense foliage. Opposite, entire leaves to 16 cm long, sessile and clasping the stem. Flowers tightly packed in rounded heads, orange-red.
Habitat:
Origin is India, but found in cultivation throughout Central and South America, West Indies, and Madagascar. In Costa Rica, you will find this plant in sunny gardens, parks, hotels, at low to mid levels probably because this plant flowers continually.
Notes:
This is a popular hedge plant. In its native habitat, the narrow-tubed flowers are probably pollinated by butterflies. The blossoms hold up well in flower arrangements. This plant is used medicinally in other parts of the world for fever, headache, bronchitis, and dysentery.
