Sawfly larvae are devastating to my perennial hibiscus ~ but your picture is awesome!

You're right Dan, these are Sawfly larvae. That defense posture is quite characteristic I think eg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Craesus_septentrionalis.jpg Knowing the plant they're feeding on could help id the species.
