looks like an intermediate male.
I haven't gone out much lately. I'm planning on going to Moraga to Valle Vista staging area EBMUD. I want to see what's showing up over there. sorry wrong lake.
I think that this link is excellent. http://colintalcroft.com/Sonoma_County_Bird_Watching_Spots/Lesser_Goldfinch.html Going by it.
But you can always ask Liam.
In spring and summer it would have a yellow back. Winter olive like the Lesser minus the black cap. Yours is olive back and looks dark on the top of the head. http://birds.audubon.org/birds/american-goldfinch
It could very well be possible that it is not into it's winter plumage, fully?
Yes the American do migrate here but you don't see them much.
First image looks like a black cap to me
Looks like a Lesser. The American in winter plumage lacks the black crown. http://colintalcroft.com/Sonoma_County_Bird_Watching_Spots/Lesser_Goldfinch.html
You most definitely have American Goldfinch in the winter, check the link I provided. If this were a Lesser Goldfinch, it would have a full black cap, and it does not.
looks like American Gold Finch which do migrate here in the winter months.
