Habitat:

The Barred Owl is becoming more comom in the Pacific Northwest.

Notes:

A special visit from a Barred Owl in my garden this morning. I loved watching it so close while it watched the birds and squirrels at my feeders but I know it is unusual behaviour for this owl to be so exposed in the daylight hours. I wondered if it had an injured wing but when I came home from work, it had disappeared. A memorable visitor!

Yes, Alice, and I have seen her a few times since but never so close or for so long. Of course, I am not positive it is the same bird, but ....

thank you Birdlady for the inside scoop, ~ interesting the rather non-chalance attitude... i should think that if there was a wing problem it would hang around for some TLC. Right after my encounter with the Great Horned Owl i serendipitiously came across a book at the Library, called The Owl and the Woodpecker by Paul Bannick, from the upper Northwest ~ Puget Sound area. Delightful book on these two species and their interactions from all over the US. with a CD recording of Calls of both Owls and Woodpeckers.

Thanks, when I first saw the owl, I took pics through the window closest to it, then at the kitchen window which was better lighting, then I opened the window as I realized the owl was not nervous at all in my presence, then I actually took the best photos outside about 20 feet from the owl. It never seemed alarmed by me at all. It was far more interested in the squirrels and birds on my deck but never made a move towards them at all while I was there. I REALLY wanted to stay home from work and see what would happen. I still suspect it has something wrong with one wing.

Exquisite Pix! Are you shooting through a window? More to the point, does the Barred Owl know you are immoralizing it? i chanced to get pix of a Great Horned Owl a cpl weeks ago and it seemed mildly amused it was on camera ~ i finally got bored, and he went back to sleep.
