Description:

Horned Toad, Horny Toad? I never did clarify that. Either way it doesn't look like something you'd want to find in your sleeping bag.

Most likely this is Phrynosoma platyrhinos calidiarum - Southern Desert Horned Lizard based on the location. I'm unable to see the markings well to definitively say the species. This link shows you the lizards in CA. http://www.californiaherps.com/lizards/lizardsmaps.html
And TCU gets it entirely wrong by calling their mascot the "horned frogs." :-(
But isn't horny toad fun to say? Horned lizard for sure.
I've moved this to amphibians for you.
I can see the similarity, but horny toads are a different animal. Convergent evolution perhaps?
